Peer Specialist - Residential Treatment Facility

Job Summary
To assist residents in their individual recovery
process and to assist the program community in
developing an environment that promotes
recovery. To utilize your belief in and your
own personal experience of recovery to encourage
self-determination and engagement in meaningful
community integrated activities.
Specific Duties
- Provide training and assist in orientation of new employees to help staff understand and accept the concept of recovery and be supportive of a peer culture that promotes recovery.
- To educate all residents to the concept of recovery.
- Educate and engage residents in the Wellness Recovery Action Plan process.
- Facilitate self-help groups for individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance abuse disorders.
- Co-facilitate resident community meetings to nurture a peer support culture.
- Assist in the development and implementation of any other educational and support groups deemed beneficial by the program community.
- Assist residents in developing and practicing the skills defined on their psychiatric rehabilitation plans. This may include accompanying residents to appointments or leisure activities to provide support and encouragement.
- Link residents to community resources and peer supports in the community to promote community integration.
- Model and promote self-advocacy.
- Attend trainings on relevant topics such as recovery, substance abuse and psychiatric rehabilitation.
- Participate in all meetings, task forces or support groups designated by regulatory bodies and/or PATH.
- Share own experiences as a person in recovery.
- Keep supervisor and the treatment team informed of all potential problematic situations/concerns/issues in addition to individual resident strengths and achievements.
- Actively participate in team meetings and ensure a recovery perspective is a key component of all discussions.
- Complete all required documentation in a timely, legible manner.
- Be aware of and follow PATH policies and procedures including those regarding confidentiality.
- Participate in quality improvement and data gathering as assigned.
Position Requirements
History of receiving mental health and/or substance abuse services, demonstrated proficiency in reading and writing. Has obtained DBH approved certification as a peer specialist.
